A Study of Satyarth Prakash is a comprehensive study of the philosophical, religious, social, and reformative thought of Swami Dayanand Saraswati, with particular emphasis on his magnum opus, Satyarth Prakash (The Light of Truth). Originally written in Hindi, this influential work presents Swami Dayanand’s interpretation of the Vedas and his systematic examination of religious beliefs, philosophical doctrines, social practices, and ethical principles.
The course introduces learners to Dayanand Saraswati’s central objective of restoring what he regarded as the authentic spirit of Vedic thought through reason, evidence, ethical conduct, and devotion to the one Supreme Being. It examines his critique of superstition, idolatry, ritualism, social inequalities, sectarian dogmas, and practices that he considered inconsistent with Vedic principles.
Particular attention will be given to Dayanand’s use of logic, rational inquiry, scriptural interpretation, ethics, and theism in developing his philosophical position. Students will explore his understanding of God, the individual self, nature, karma, rebirth, liberation, morality, education, social organization, and the role of the Vedas in human life.
The course also examines the broader significance of Satyarth Prakash in the intellectual and social history of modern India, including its relationship to the Vedic revival movement, religious reform, education, social reform, and the development of the Arya Samaj. Through a systematic study of selected themes and arguments in the text, learners will gain an understanding of both the constructive philosophy and the critical reform agenda articulated by Swami Dayanand Saraswati.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, learners should be able to:

  • Explain the historical background and purpose of Satyarth Prakash.
  • Describe Swami Dayanand Saraswati’s understanding of Vedic philosophy and religion.
  • Examine his views on God, the soul, nature, karma, rebirth, and liberation.
  • Understand his use of logic and rational inquiry in evaluating religious beliefs and practices.
  • Analyze his criticism of superstition, ritualism, sectarianism, and social evils.
  • Explain his views on ethics, education, social reform, and righteous conduct.
  • Appreciate the role of Satyarth Prakash in the revival and reinterpretation of Vedic thought.
  • Understand the influence of Swami Dayanand’s ideas on the religious and social reform movements of modern India.
  • Develop the ability to critically engage with the philosophical arguments presented in Satyarth Prakash.

Course Approach

The course is designed as a text-centered and reflective study. Learners will engage with the major ideas and arguments of Satyarth Prakash, with appropriate attention to their philosophical, religious, ethical, and historical contexts. The emphasis is not merely on memorizing Dayanand’s conclusions, but on understanding the reasoning and principles through which he arrived at them.
The course therefore provides learners with an opportunity to study Satyarth Prakash both as an important work of Vedic philosophical thought and as a significant document of religious and social reform in modern India.
